Background: Established in 1872, the St. Adalbert’s Aid Society was established to support the Polish emigrants who settled around the West Side of Grand Rapids. The society assisted in building the first Polish Catholic Church in Grand Rapids – the Church of St. Adalbert. They built their first meeting rooms at the corner of Fifth and Davis in 1893 and actively supported the St. Adalbert’s Parish. Since its early beginnings, the Hall membership has donated countless money and man hours to aid members, community organizations and events in Grand Rapids – specifically the West Side neighborhoods. A member only club, the Hall is open 12 times a year to the public for various events ranging from Halloween and St. Patrick’s celebrations, various fundraising events for local charities and annually for the greatest celebration ever – Pulaski Days.

Background: Young veterans from World War II with names like Rusilowski, Lewakowski, Stalec, and Potapowicz wanted to establish a American Legion post to reflect the strong Polish-American heritage of the Northeast side of Grand Rapids. After several meetings at Diamond Avenue Hall in 1947, the fledgling Post was officially chartered, elected officers, and found a home at 700 Michigan Street N.E. The Post membership grew quickly and moved across the street to 658 Michigan Street N.E. In 1953, the Post added the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, and in 1963 they chartered a group named the Sons of The American Legion.
Today's Northeastern Post is surely different than the group of spirited young veterans of 1946, but our roots will forever be a part of our sense of pride and obligation. Our members come from a variety of ethnic, social, and political backgrounds. All three of our organizations are both non-sectarian and non-political. Simply put, we believe our diversity is our strength.
