Each year our society organizes the celebration in Grand Rapids of Matka Boska Zielna, the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary held on August 15. As it has for the past several years, this Catholic feast day was celebrated at St. Isidore Church, with Monsignor Edward Hankiewicz officiating.
In Poland, it is celebrated at the Feast of Our Lady of Greens, where herbs are blessed and then woven into wreaths that are hung near holy pictures and used as medicinal recipes as protection against illness and natural disasters.
Our evening service included a Mass with traditional flowers and herbs, music sung in Polish, and a procession to and crowning of a statue of the Virgin Mary in the church courtyard. We estimate that more than 200 people attended 2019 Matka Boska and a reception with refreshments that followed the service.
